Korg M1 workstation — 1988 hardware sampled for ProducerStack Piano 16 multi-sample preset

The Korg M1 Piano 16 is the most culturally loaded piano preset in electronic music, the percussive stab behind Madonna’s “Vogue,” Black Box’s “Ride on Time,” and Snap!’s “Rhythm Is A Dancer,” still reaching into contemporary productions three decades later. This pack delivers 732 samples across 12 velocity layers, captured from a pristine 1988 Korg M1 workstation through a Neve 1073 DPX preamp chain at 24-bit/48kHz, and rebuilt as a Serum 2 multi-sample preset and Ableton Live Rack, each with 8 macro controls and 40 MIDI loops featuring classic UK house progressions. This is the hardware, not a model of it.

The Korg M1 Piano 16 Sound

The Piano 16 is Korg’s factory preset 01, the first sound the M1 offered, and the one that ended up on more records than any other preset in electronic music history. Its 16-bit PCM engine produced a bright, transient-forward piano attack that behaved differently to acoustic samples: it cut through a mix at high velocity without needing to compete with the kick, it sat naturally under four-on-the-floor arrangements, and it carried enough harmonic upper-mid presence to function as both a chord instrument and a percussive stab simultaneously.

Passed through a Neve 1073 DPX preamp during capture, these multi-samples carry both the M1’s PCM character and the console warmth that serious producers immediately recognise.
