The Korg M1 Organ 2 is one of the most recognisable sounds in house music. Robin S built Show Me Love around it. Crystal Waters rode it. Every DJ who played a UK warehouse between 1988 and 1995 heard it at some point in the night. That warm, breathy organ stab, slightly nasal in the mids, with a sustain that holds without cluttering the mix, became the harmonic backbone of deep house, gospel house, and the Hacienda sound. We captured it from original 1988 Korg M1 hardware through a Neve 1073 preamp and built it out as a full multi-sample instrument for Serum 2 and Ableton.

The Korg M1 Organ 2 Sound

The M1 Organ 2 has a character that software recreations consistently miss: a subtle digital texture in the upper harmonics, a bloom in the mid-range that opens up under a chord, and an envelope tail that feels alive rather than processed. Run it through a Neve 1073 channel strip, the same signal path UK producers used in studio sessions throughout the golden era — and it picks up a warmth and density that plants it firmly in the mix without EQ surgery.

It's the right organ for soulful chord stabs, two-bar progressions in deep house and gospel house, and the classic Hacienda sound. It also layers well into tech house when you want a harmonic reference point that doesn't fight the kick. Full key-span multi-sampling means every note plays back the actual hardware tone at that pitch, no single-note stretching, no artefacts at the extremes.

Is this sampled from a real Korg M1 or a software emulation?

Real hardware. We used an original 1988 Korg M1 workstation — not a plugin, not an emulation. Every sample was captured live from the hardware through a Neve 1073DPX preamp, recorded at 48kHz/24-bit across the full key range.

What's the difference between the Serum 2 and Ableton Rack versions?

The sound is identical. The difference is workflow: Serum 2 works across any DAW with Xfer's modulation and wavetable routing. The Ableton Rack integrates natively with Live's browser and session workflow. Choose based on how you work — both versions include the same MIDI files and audio demos.
